Alumnus/Alumni of Distinction Award
Karen (Jones) Rahn '55
Karen (Butch) Jones Rahn attended Wales Lincoln School all 12 years. She always enjoyed sports and especially basketball. She played post forward all four years which as you recall it was six on six. Her coach was Everett Fuller with her senior year by Gene Evans. She was an outstanding ball handler and had a very good pipit shot which was almost impossible to stop. She was selected for all County Team and many more honors while in high school.
When she graduated she attended school at Commercial Extension in Omaha, NE. She took Secretarial and Business. While attending school there she was on the Basketball Team where she did lots of traveling and received many honors. One of her great honors was she was selected All American two years. One of her most avid fans was one I'm sure many of you remember, Uncle Joe Leader.
She also was inducted to the Hall of Fame in Iowa. She was the first one to be inducted who hadn't played in the State Tournament.
After graduating from Commercial Extension she worked for Vickers Inc. as secretary and worked for her way up to being the President's Secretary and held many responsible duties. She worked there until she retired.
She is married to Dick Rahn and they live in Omaha and they both enjoy playing golf and going to the College World Series. They both enjoy watching many sports on the TV.
She has always given her best no matter whether sports, work, or caring for others.
Charolette Wetzel '47
Charlotte Wetzel taught second grade, here in Red Oak, for fifty seven years. That may be a record for teaching the same grade in the same school system. Some of the awards she received in her lifetime was the following. She was on the state basketball team when she was a junior in high school. She received the AK-SAR-BEN Good Neighbor award, The Veteran of Foreign Wars Teacher of the year award, both on the local and state level, University of Nebraska at Omaha Distinguished Alumni Award, The Rotary Club Outstanding Teacher of the Year award, Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year Award, both on the local and state level, Iowa Agricultural Teacher of the Year Award, Iowa State Education Teacher of the Year award for the years 2002 through 2005, the Booster Club's Fan of the Year award, was listed in the publication of Who's Who of American Teachers was listed in the Outstanding American Teachers publication and was the Grand Marshall of the homecoming parade and Grand Marshall of the Junction Days Parade.
She also wrote poetry and had several poems published. She entered poems in The World of Poetry contests and received awards on these poems. She received an Honorary Black Belt from the Red Oak Tae Kwan Do School.
When she retired she received a Certificate of Recognition from Governor Vilsack on her teaching
career.
Some of the organizations she was a member of were the National Education Association, Iowa State Education, Red Oak Education Association, Phi Delta Kappa International, Delta Kappa Gamma, Delta Kappa Pi, and the Community of Christ Church.
Eugene Evans '46
The only Wales Graduate to go on and then take a team to State Basketball Tournament. He was First Team All Southwest Class B Basketball.
Harley Rutledge '43
Went on to become a professor at Missouri University with a doctor's degree. He wrote four books and was a MNBC - advisor on "spacg" and aliens. He was honored several times for his commitment.
